Who needs an English test?

Are you one of the following:

  • English is your first language, or
  • You are fully fluent in English and another language, or
  • You have successful completed university qualifications that lasted at least one academic year and were fully taught and examined in English

If you are not in one of the 3 groups above, you need to provide an English language test with your Application.

This still applies if:
  • You are currently studying a university qualification taught in English but have not successfully completed it yet: you still need to provide an English language test.
  • Only part of your university qualification was taught and examined in English e.g. if you spent a semester of your studies as an exchange student at an English speaking institution: you still need to provide an English language test.

Individual course requirements

Some courses may require a wider group of applicants to complete an English language test. If so, they will give details in the Documents screen of your Application.

If you are already providing an IELTS test in the Documents screen you do not need to upload this twice.

Which test can I take and what scores do I need?

All courses accept an IELTS test.

This should be an Academic test taken no more than 2 years before the course starts i.e. taken from October 2024 onwards. Though some courses may consider an older test.

The scores you need vary from course to course, ranging from 6.5 to 8.0.

Some courses accept other English language tests e.g. Pearson, TOEFL, Cambridge etc, but some courses may only accept IELTS.

What if I don't have my test results yet?

You must apply by the deadline

Submit your Application by 1.00pm UK time on 19 November 2025.

See the Documents Overview page for providing test results after you have submitted your Application.
