Entry requirements

Who can apply

We can consider:

  • Applicants who have not yet completed their undergraduate studies: offers will be conditional on achieving a 2:1 (see Academic Requirements below).
  • All other applicants must have GBC confirmed at the point of application.

We cannot consider:

  • Candidates who started any Health Education England (HEE) funded training programme after 1st April 2022. You will not be eligible to apply for Clinical Psychology training until two years after the qualification has been awarded. Please see the NHS England website for more information.
  • Applicants with overseas fees status

Academic Requirements

OR

  • A psychology degree (2:2) which confers eligibility for GBC plus a Masters level degree or above, in an area relevant to the profession of Clinical Psychology (of at least 65%)

OR

  • A degree in another subject (1st or 2:1 honours) plus an accredited conversion qualification which confers eligibility for GBC

OR

  • A degree in another subject (2:2) plus an accredited Masters level conversion qualification which confers eligibility for GBC (of at least 65%)

Clinical

To be eligible you must have:

  • A minimum of 12 months full-time (or equivalent) experience relevant to the profession of Clinical Psychology acquired within the last 3 years, at the point of application

You must demonstrate your experience has:

  • allowed applicants to gain a realistic sense of what working as an applied psychologist in clinical or health settings means
  • allowed them to apply psychological principles in practice

Experience does not need to be:

  • a formal Assistant Psychologist post
  • extensive, prolonged, or in a range of settings

Types of experience

Roles held by successful candidates in recent years include:

  • Assistant Psychologist
  • Support worker roles in NHS, Social Care and third sector organisations
  • IAPT roles including Graduate Mental Health Workers, Psychological Wellbeing practitioners and Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners
  • Health Care Assistant
  • Learning Support Assistant / Teaching Assistant
  • Recovery Worker
  • Positive Behaviour Specialist
  • Research Assistant/Associate/Lecturer

Research roles will need to have included contact with clinically relevant groups, involving the application of direct methods of assessment or testing (for example, but not limited to: psychometric tests, diagnostic interviews, biological samples, experimental designs, intervention delivery or semi-structured interviews).

References / Suitability Statements

The clinical Suitability Statement should be written by your current or most recent line manager. If an alternative referee is provided, a reason must be provided on the application form.

Documents required

  • A document confirming your GBC status
  • An academic transcript for your undergraduate psychology degree
  • If your undergraduate degree was not in psychology, an academic transcript for your conversion course
  • Transcript of your Masters degree, if your undergraduate degree was at 2:2

Driving Licence

The programme requires successful applicants to hold a current driving licence that is valid in the UK and have access to transport for work purposes.

Short-listed candidates will be required to present proof of their full valid driving licence on the day of the interview (subject to reasonable adjustments for disability).

English Language Requirements

Applicants are required to meet the English language requirements of the programme. More information is available on our website.

  • an ability to reflect on their own identity and the experiences, opportunities or obstacles this has impacted
  • an ability to apply research

International applicants

Due to the funding arrangements in place for the programme, we are unable to consider applications from candidates who are not classed as home fees students. This includes most international candidates, with the exception of candidates from the Republic of Ireland.
