Professional accreditation

  • The Programme is approved by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) against the standards for the accreditation of Doctoral Programmes in Clinical Psychology
  • From September 2022, all trainees entering the programme will be able to gain additional secondary accreditation during their training at British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) Level 2 or Intermediate Level accreditation through the Association of Family Therapy (AFT). These are optional pathways which trainees can step into to obtain accreditation during their DClinPsy training programme.
  • All trainees will undertake the AFT Foundation level course during the second year of their training
  • We offer a Neuropsychology pathway in collaboration with the PgDip in Theory and Practical Neuropsychology Practice at the University of Bristol. Upon qualification, Trainees that have followed this pathway will have completed a proportion of the knowledge and practice requirements that permit conferment of the Bristol PGDip in Neuropsychology and can also be granted fast-track entry onto the UK Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists following completion of the PgDip.

Approach and theories

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Family Therapy & Systemic Practice
  • Clinical Neuropsychology
  • An Introduction to Therapeutic Models with an Emerging Evidence Base (e.g. CAT, EMDR, IPT, Mindfulness, ACT, CFT)
  • Specialist Applications (e.g. Forensic, Clinical Health Psychology)
  • Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
  • Personal & Professional Development
  • Leadership

Placement locations

  • Placements are primarily provided within regional NHS Trusts, including Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW), Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys Foundation Trust (TEWV), Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NUTH) and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Trainees are therefore allocated to placements over a large geographic area, covering Northumberland up to the Scottish Borders, North and West Cumbria, North Durham, and more central locations in Tyne and Wear.
  • Given the rural geography of the region, limited public transport in some areas, and the community-based nature of many placements, we strongly recommend that Trainees have the use of a car and a current valid driving licence, although this is not mandatory.
  • Where Trainees have an identified disability, long-term health condition or carer responsibilities, this is taken into consideration as much as possible when allocating placements.
  • The Programme will make all reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of candidates and Trainees with disabilities under the guidance of our Disability Lead.
