Approach and theories

The course offers a competency-based and life-span model of clinical training.

There is the opportunity to develop skills in a broad range of models, including:

  • CBT, Psychodynamic, Systemic, Behavioural and ‘third-wave’ models

In addition to our core teaching curriculum and learning on placement, we currently offer flexibility in Year 3 of training such that trainees have a choice of additional optional curriculum workshops that can support the development of specialist interests, build on competency development, and give access to teaching, psychologists, and services in new and emerging service or therapeutic areas. Thus, trainees can shape their continuing personal and professional development in the final year of training.

Placement locations

  • Years 1 & 2 - placements are located in Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country (which includes Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton).
  • Year 3 – placements continue to be offered across Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country. On rare occasions, and primarily dependent on competency needs, placements across a wider geographical area can be considered.

As our placements cover a large geographical region, Trainees are expected to live within area or within a reasonable commutable distance. It helps if trainees have access to their own transport and/or they must be able to readily commute to placements using public transport. We take a thoughtful and flexible approach to the process of placement allocation that ensures we make effective use of all available placements whilst also exposing trainees to varied clinical specialties and a range of experiences to meet competency needs.
