Training with us

Support

The nature of the programme is such that one team member may act in more than one role at any time.

Personal Tutor

When you join us, you will be allocated a personal tutor who you will be able to meet with regularly to consider all development and pastoral elements of training.

NHS Line Manager

You will have an NHS line manager, who is also a member of the programme team, who will support you with annual leave, sickness absence and any other employment issues.

Clinical Tutor

You will have a clinical tutor, who oversees the development of clinical skills through placement allocation and evaluation. They will visit you on placement and ask for your feedback on the placement experience you are having.

Research Supervisors

You will identify two research supervisors who will guide you in the development and completion of your thesis project. You will meet with them regularly for supervision and they will be chosen based on having the interest and skills in your thesis topic area.

Mentor

You have the option to be connected to a mentor, who will be a clinical psychologist outside the programme team. They will be available for general support and guidance.

Trainee Buddy

You will be assigned to a trainee buddy, someone in the cohort above yours, who you may want to connect with to discuss your experience of the programme and you may benefit from their advice and experience.

Group work

You will work in a quad for the duration of training with colleagues from your cohort. In this group you will undertake assessment tasks and will be guided to work through group process challenges as a specific point of learning.

Reflective practice groups and skills workshops

Alongside teaching, we schedule reflective practice groups and skills workshops, often with a specific focus to support conversations that help to embed learning from teaching and placement and to support the transition into and out of training.

Our Approach

The culture and philosophy of the Trent programme is one that strives for excellence. Trainees describe the programme as "high demand, with high support, for high reward".

We expect to work alongside our trainees, as adult learners to develop their skills and encourage their own positioning within the profession. We prioritise the sharing of developmental feedback and we believe that good learning comes from doing and reflecting on doing.

Feedback

The emphasis on feedback is reciprocal. We expect trainees to be represented at all programme committees and request formal feedback on all aspects of their learning experience so that decisions about changes to the programme are made with full sight of their experience.

This same process enables the involvement of service user and carer colleagues and clinical psychologists working in the region.

Partnership

The programme benefits from solid, long-standing partnerships with a number of NHS trusts and is embedded within two excellent Universities, each with differing strengths and resources.

By delivering the programme jointly our trainees benefit from exposure to a range of partner organisations, whilst remaining contained by a stable, core staff team.
