Placement locations
We understand that travel and relocation can be significant considerations when undertaking doctoral training. We are committed to supporting all our trainees in navigating these aspects with care and transparency.
Trainees are allocated to a placement base for the duration of the programme at the point of accepting a place. This allocation will remain fixed for the full three years of training. While we fully appreciate the personal and practical implications involved in relocating, by accepting a place on the programme, trainees agree to the assigned placement area.
Placement bases currently include Devon, Somerset, and Dorset. Each trainee will be assigned one of these regions as their placement base, and we work closely with NHS Trusts and other clinical providers across these areas. Given the size and rural nature of each placement base we strongly recommend that trainees live within or very near to their allocated region for the duration of the programme. This is to ensure the most beneficial training experience and to support trainees’ wellbeing and work-life balance.
Please note that once the programme has commenced, we are not able to make changes to placement allocations. Placement planning is a complex process carried out in partnership with service providers to ensure the quality and consistency of clinical training.
Due to the wide geographical spread of each placement base and often rural locations of placements, trainees should expect to travel regularly within their allocated region as part of their training. A full driving licence and access to a car are strongly recommended, as public transport links can be limited in many areas.
We are committed to supporting individual needs and will consider reasonable adjustments for trainees with disabilities or significant caring responsibilities wherever possible. While we cannot guarantee specific placement locations, we will always work with trainees to understand their circumstances and make adjustments where feasible and appropriate.
Our priority is to provide all trainees with a high-quality and supportive training experience, while balancing the needs of partner services and the clinical learning environment.
If you have any questions or concerns about placements or travel requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact the programme team for further advice.
