Professional accreditation

Approach and theories

  • All trainees are required to demonstrate competency in cognitive behavioural therapy

All trainees are required to demonstrate competency in at least one of the following: 

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or
  • Cognitive Analytic Therapy, or
  • Compassion Focussed Therapy, or
  • Positive Behavioural Support, or
  • Psychodynamic Therapy, or
  • Systemic therapy

Teaching and placement experiences are organised to facilitate the development of these competencies.

  • Since 2023 we have been piloting a CBT pathway, with a view to working towards eventual BABCP accreditation. The pilot will continue for a small number of trainees from the 2027 intake. More details will be provided to candidates offered a place on the programme.
  • We are currently developing an AFT-accreditable Systemic Therapy pathway but this won’t be in place for the 2027 intake, although the teaching will be covered in your curriculum.

Placement locations

We are commissioned to provide placements for the South Yorkshire region so this includes Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster (and potentially also North Derbyshire). Trainees are expected to travel within this area.

Personal circumstances e.g. health conditions and carer responsibilities are taken into account as much as possible when allocating placements. However, please be aware that a trainee’s competency development is the main focus when allocating placements.

Whilst it’s not an essential criteria that you need to drive for the Sheffield course, it does make it more challenging if you don’t, especially around the allocation of placements and being able to obtain all of the competencies required to complete the course. If you cannot drive for medical or health reasons then this will obviously be accommodated through reasonable adjustments and there could be financial support available through Access to Work.

The options of placements for non-drivers are usually more limited. Many placements within our region are community-based and you would be required to travel to visit patients either in their homes or in care homes, hospitals etc, therefore they do specify that only drivers can undertake these placements. If you are a non-driver on community placements the expectation of caseload and level of work would be the same so you need to consider if you are able to manage the potentially longer travel times this would require.

Please also be aware that as well as travelling within placements, you also need to be able to get to the placement base, which aren’t always on an accessible public transport route. This could be anywhere in the region to meet your competency needs. We are not able to prioritise a location closer to home based on non-driving alone. Allocations are prioritised on competencies.

The majority of our placements are all face-to-face working and involve visiting the placement base and therefore hybrid working may not be an option.
