Should I apply this year?
The exact starting date varies from centre to centre but all courses start between early September and mid-October 2024 and have only one intake per academic year.
Deferred entry, Work experience, Higher degrees
Deferred entry
There is no system of deferred entry. If you do not take up your place in autumn 2024 you will normally be expected to re-apply the following year. Course centres may occasionally allow deferred entry in unforeseen circumstances but this is not the norm.
Work experience
Some courses require a minimum length of time for relevant experience (e.g. 12 months) for your Application to be considered.
- Please see the Entry Requirements section for further details
Higher degrees
Universities will not usually let you enrol on a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology if at that time you are enrolled on another degree, e.g. a PhD or Masters programme.
If you have any outstanding requirements from another programme when the clinical course starts, you may have to withdraw from that programme to be able to start or continue your Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
- Please see the Courses section for further details of the requirements of individual course centres
People completing GBC-accredited courses in autumn 2023
If you are completing your psychology degree or your conversion course in autumn 2023 and will get your results by the end of January 2024, please state in the Basics section of your Application that you have completed the qualification and indicate which GBC document you intend to provide. Also, please tick the relevant "Provide later" box on the Documents screen in your Application to complete that page.
Please submit your Application by the closing date: 1:00pm (UK time) on 22 November 2023.
When you get your results in December 2023/January 2024 please:
- email us a document confirming your status for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) - please see the Contact Us page for our email address
- login to your Application to check the specific documents required by the course centres you have chosen
Your Application will be released to the course centres by the end of January.
- Please see the Documents section if you need more information about the items required
If you will not complete your qualification until autumn 2024 you cannot apply this year because you will not have your results, and therefore will not have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), before the courses start.
- Please see the Entry Requirements section if you need more information about GBC
People completing GBC-accredited courses in spring/summer 2024
If you will complete your psychology degree or your conversion course in spring/summer 2024, you do not have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) yet.
- Please see the Entry Requirements section if you need more information about GBC
Some courses consider people who do not have GBC when they apply, but the majority do not.
- Please see the Courses section for details of the requirements of individual course centres
If the courses you are interested in accept applications from people who do not have GBC yet, you must ensure that you will have GBC in place before the courses start. In practice, this means that you must have completed your qualification and got your results by the end of August 2024.
If you will not get your results until autumn 2024 you cannot apply this year because you will not have GBC before the courses start.
Please note that very few people who do not have GBC when they apply are successful e.g. only 2 people have been accepted to NHS places nationally in the last 5 years.
If you decide to apply you will not be able to upload a GBC document as you will not have GBC. Either you will not be asked for a GBC document or you may need to tick the relevant "Provide later" box on the Documents screen to complete that page.
